We will not win our rights by staying quietly in our closets” – Harvey Milk
There has been much to celebrate in our community over the last several years: the dismantling of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell; the fall of the Defense of Marriage Act; the passing of same-sex marriage by the United States Supreme Court.  These are all momentous victories for the LGBT community and incredibly progressive steps towards the goal of equality and acceptance for all.  In the same light, unfortunate aggressive action against our community continues, the passing of an RFRA in Indiana; over 1200 hate crimes against the LGBT community in 20131 alone; and over 40 anti-LGBT bills introduced in 16 states already in 2017.
It is imperative for our future that we remain active, get involved, and let our voices be heard.  We believe that involvement can begin at any age, but is particularly invigorating during one’s collegiate years.  Whether through activism, volunteering or pursuing a career involving the betterment of the LGBT community, we want to encourage the younger members of the LGBT community and our allies to continue the work they have started by awarding the Gayborhood Scholarship.
